Alex Sanderson
Hi! I am a Pilates instructor based in Deal. I offer small group Mat classes at Walmer Castle and private, equipment-based sessions in my studio.
My passion for movement started in childhood with figure skating and dance classes in my home state of Maine, USA. This passion led me to coach The University of New England Dance Team and work in the allied health team at New England Rehabilitation Hospital, where I saw firsthand the benefits of Pilates for people of all fitness levels.
I hold a BSc. in Exercise Science and an MSc. in Dance Science and Education. Since moving to the UK, I have qualified as a Level 3 Mat Pilates instructor and furthered my expertise with Pre & Postnatal Exercise and Reformer Pilates courses. I am currently working towards a Classical Comprehensive Pilates qualification with Everybody Pilates, a lineage through Jay Grimes to Joseph Pilates, to further enhance my knowledge of the method.
With over a decade of experience, I combine exercise science and rehabilitation principles to provide safe and effective Pilates instruction. It brings me pure joy to help my clients confidently play with their grandchildren, safely learning to return to fitness after having a baby, gain strength pre-and post- operation, work towards an athletic goal, live on their own into their 90's. Its not just their goals in their Pilates practice but in their everyday lives that make the most impact.Â
I would be delighted to discuss how I can support your journey. Please feel free to contact me for further information.
Joseph Pilates
Joseph Pilates, born in Germany in 1880, developed his exercise method, "Contrology," in response to his own childhood illnesses and resulting physical limitations. Inspired by various disciplines like yoga, martial arts, boxing, and ballet, Pilates believed in the connection between posture, lifestyle, and health.
He and his wife Clara established a studio in New York in 1923, attracting a diverse clientele and training apprentices to spread his method globally. Pilates's innovative approach is evident in his vast collection of over 600 Mat and apparatus exercises. His inventions, including the Cadillac, Reformer, Wunda Chair, and Spine Corrector, remain integral to the practice today.
Central to Pilates's philosophy was the focus on holistic, full-body exercise, rather than isolated muscle training, as the path to optimal health. The apparatuses he designed, with their unique system of springs and pulleys, provide progressive resistance that engages both the limbs and core muscles, promoting proper alignment and posture.
Ultimately, Pilates distinguished his method by emphasizing that Contrology was more than just a series of exercises; it was a comprehensive approach to healthy living.
The Elders
The Pilates Elders, or 1st generation teachers, are teachers who were taught by Joe himself. Their direct connection to Joseph Pilates provides unique insights into his work and teaching. Through the work of these teachers and those who continue their lineage, we can learn not only more about Joseph PIlates but also how they have maintained their respect and honour of his work whilst developing their own voice, emphasis and style. You can experience each unique lineage by sourcing teachers trained under the tutelage of an Elder.
